What group travel actually means

In airline terms, a group is a set of passengers who fly the same itinerary on one reservation, usually ten people or more. Instead of buying tickets one by one, an organizer asks the airline, or an agency, for a block of seats at a single fare.

That block can usually be held for a while before names are confirmed, which is why groups work well for trips where the final headcount takes time to settle. In exchange, airlines set their own rules for deposits, deadlines and changes.

Common questions about group flights

Short answers here, with more detail on the blog.

How many people count as a group on a flight?

Most airlines start group handling at about ten passengers travelling together on the same itinerary, though the exact threshold differs by airline and route. Below that number you would normally book individual tickets.

Are group fares always cheaper?

Not always. A group fare's main value is that it can hold a block of seats at one price while you collect names and payments. On some dates individual sale fares are lower, so it is worth comparing both.

When do I need to give the airline every traveler's name?

Airlines set a name deadline for each group booking, commonly a few weeks before departure. Until then you can often hold seats under a group name. Your confirmation will state the exact date.

Can our group sit together?

Groups have a better chance of adjacent seats when seats are assigned early, but seating depends on the airline's rules and the aircraft. Ask about seat assignment as soon as the booking is ticketed.

What happens if some travelers drop out?

Many group contracts allow the group size to shrink by a set amount before a cutoff date without penalty. After that, deposits or fares may be non-refundable. Read the attrition terms before paying a deposit.

Planning a trip for ten or more?

Our group desk can compare airline options, hold seats where airlines allow it, and walk you through deposits and name deadlines.
